Friends and Funding

The Friends of the Orchestra of the Eastern Shore are local citizens, organizations, businesses, and Orchestra members who donate money in support of the Orchestra. The Friends group was established in 2005, following the Orchestra's award of 501c3 non-profit status, and has faithfully supported the Orchestra’s activities every year since. Although we receive some donations at our concerts, we rely on the Friends for the vast majority of our financial needs. For the orchestra to thrive, we need to grow the Friends group and increase the level of support. If you are not already a supporter, please become a Friend by making a contribution to the Orchestra.

Contributions benefit the Orchestra in several ways. First, they provide a secure base of operations by enabling a regular stipend to the music director, purchase of music, rental of rehearsal and performance space, and modest administrative and musical expenses. Secondly, they are matching funds for possible foundation grants. Perhaps most importantly, local contributions are proof of community value and support. Friends are recognized and listed in our printed concert programs.

For many years the town of Onancock has provided a $500 contribution matched by the Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) under its Local Government Challenge Grant program. The VCA also made two Presenter Touring Assistance matching grants to the Orchestra in 2018. These grants require the Orchestra to provide matching funds of an amount equal to the VCA portion. The first, in January, funded coaching of Orchestra musicians by seven members of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in preparation for an upcoming Orchestra performance. The second grant will fund an October 8 chamber music performance by VSO musicians followed again by coaching of the Orchestra. The public is welcome at both sessions. Contributions are needed to provide the Orchestra's required matching amounts for these grants, and hopefully for future opportunities. As both parts of the grant go to the VSO, the program benefits the VSO as well.

Ideas and in-kind donations as well as monetary contributions are welcome. For questions, contact us or call Marion Naar at 757‑442‑2821.
