Friends and Funding

The Friends of the Orchestra of the Eastern Shore are local citizens, organizations, businesses, and Orchestra members who donate money in support of the Orchestra. The Friends group was established in 2005, following the Orchestra's award of 501c3 non-profit status, and has faithfully supported the Orchestra’s activities every year since. Although we receive some donations at our concerts, we rely on the Friends for the vast majority of our financial needs. For the orchestra to thrive, we need to grow the Friends group and increase the level of support. If you are not already a supporter, please become a Friend by making a contribution to the Orchestra.

Contributions benefit the Orchestra in several ways. First, they provide a secure base of operations by enabling a regular stipend to the music director, purchase of sheet music, honoraria and travel reimbursement for guest soloists, and modest administrative and musical expenses.

Secondly, contributions provide matching funds for grants. In 2018 the Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) made two Presenter Touring Assistance matching grants to the Orchestra, one in January and a second in October. OES must provide funds equal to the amount of the VCA grant. This money enables a group of about seven VSO musicians to attend an OES rehearsal and coach orchestra members on technical and musical points. The grant requires that the VSO musicians provide a performance as well as the coaching, with the public invited to both parts. The combination is of interest to both orchestra members and attendees; as both VCA and OES portions of the grant go to the VSO, it benefits the VSO as well. We hope to receive a third such grant in early 2020 when we will be performing Schumann's cello concerto with a VSO soloist.

Perhaps most importantly, local contributions are proof of community value and support. Friends are recognized and listed in our printed concert programs.

The Orchestra is also grateful to the town of Onancock, United Way of Virginia's Eastern Shore, and of course the VCA for their long time support. Onancock's annual contribution of $500 is matched by the VCA under its Local Government Challenge Grant program.
