Musicians of the Orchestra

The musicians of the Orchestra of the Eastern Shore include students, working people from a variety of professions, and retirees. All share a common passion for music making and willingly commit themselves to the discipline of regular practice, rehearsals, and performances that are the work of the Orchestra.

Orchestra musicians live throughout Virginia’s Eastern Shore, including Hampton Roads, and come together each Monday evening from 5:30 until 7:30 at Hungars Church in Bridgetown (Machipongo) to rehearse. The orchestra includes standard strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion, enabling us to perform a wide range of music.

Our repertoire is grounded primarily in the classical tradition, ranging from the Baroque era to the 21st century. We are committed to performances of masterworks by the great composers of the past, but also continue to perform more contemporary works. To showcase the artistry of talented local and regional musicians, we engage them as soloists with the Orchestra. The Hungars Church chorus often joins the Orchestra during the year for choral work selections from Handel’s Messiah being a popular choice.

In addition to their work in the Orchestra, many of the musicians also play in other area ensembles. Individuals and small groups may sometimes be available for church services, weddings, and other gatherings.

How To Join

The orchestra welcomes new string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players with prior musical experience. Members are expected to practice their parts and regularly attend rehearsals, which are held at Hungars Church on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30. To be considered simply join a rehearsal and we will see if you are a good fit.
